Reach Evelyn Lane is a little over 7.0 miles.
(If you reach Almont, you drove too far).

To search for Rosy Finches, check feeders along Evelyn
Lane.
(Also called Forest Road 860).

I have 6 Mountain Chickadee's that have been eating at my feeders this
week, along with White, and Red Breasted Nuthatch's. I have been
watching birds now for about 12 years and have never seen the
Chickadee's. Pretty exciting for me out here on the plains.

I am new to the group because I have been away at school and working in
Nebraska. I'm writing a paper about the recent Royal Tern sighting in
Nebraska and looking for other inland records. I am aware of at least 2
Colorado sightings. If anyone has information about these sightings (or
other inland sightings), please contact me off-list.

Hello cobirders;

Jefferson County
Several birders asked about Dusky Grouse locations, so Jim Bottoms and I went
to Mt Falcon Park this morning. One of those lucky days, we only had to search
about 30 minutes before finding one. The Grouse was on the hill below and east
of the old castle. It could be observed from the main trail going east from the
castle. 40 yards east of the castle and 20 feet north of the trail. Found all
three nuthatches and 4 Red Crossbills.

The hill below and west of the old castle has also been good for them this
year. If missed at either locations I usually walk east along the main trail
and look below the first bench encountered (about 400 yards or so east).

A quick stop at Genesee Mountain Park and we missed Williamsons Sapsuckers
again. No time for much else.

El Paso County
In other birding news, John Drummond reported yesterday from Big Johnson
Reservoir: Sabines Gull, American Golden Plover, Black bellied Plover, and 4
Red necked Phalaropes.

Hello cobirders,

Oregon birders Robert Lockett and Adrienne Wolf-Lockett searched
unsuccessfully for Gunnison Sage Grouse this morning along Gunnison County
Road 38. A consolation prize was a Chestnut sided Warbler. The warbler was
just south of when the road turns from paved to gravel, several miles south
of the airport. I put photos of the bird on the CoBus photo library.

INFO 16 Oct <a href="#"> Swamp Sparrow at Cherry Creek Reservoir, Arapahoe County</a> [Richard Stevens ] <br> Subject: Swamp Sparrow at Cherry Creek Reservoir, Arapahoe County
From: Richard Stevens <birdertoo AT hotmail.com>
Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2007 19:05:
Hello cobirders;

While out doing chores I stopped and walked the Cottonwood Creek Loop at Cherry
Creek Reservoir (Arapahoe County) for the last two hours of daylight. I played
a Swamp Sparrow recording at several locations and one came out of the
cattails. It was along the inlet canal at about halfway between the bird
platform and the wooden bridge east of the parking area. You can recognize the
area by a small muddy shoreline with a large group of bright green plants
(cattails?).

While standing on the old wooden bridge playing a Swamp Sparrow recording, a
flock of sparrows came by to the east (where the path is paved). The count was
37 American Robins, 9 White-crowned Sparrows (all juveniles), and 6 Song
Sparrows. When I continued the walk east to the metal bridge (just below the
Cottonwood Creek Wetlands Pond) there were 17 White-crowned Sparrows (all
adults). No additional Swamp Sparrows could be found. Thanks to Bill Cryder who
first heard a Swamp Sparrow on Sunday!

No uncommon gulls were found today around the lake. A couple of Herring Gulls,
dozens of California Gulls, and hundreds of Ring-billed Gulls were it. Two
American Tree Sparrows were around the restrooms at the campgrounds. A dozen
Great Blue Herons, no egrets, hundreds of American White Pelicans, and dozens
of Double-crested Cormorant rounded out the count. Only shorebirds were
Killdeer.

One thing that stuck me was the lack of birds especially sparrows. In late
October last year and previous years, many sparrows would be feeding on the
thistles and rabbit brush at the Cottonwood Creek and Lake Loops.

On a traffic note: trying to get to Barr Lake from the airport is next to
impossible between 3:30pm and 6:00pm. With the new town, Reunion and all the
cars heading north on Tower Road, forget it. It takes half an hour just to get
through the traffic light at 88th avenue. The reverse (Barr Lake to Airport) is
the opposite (impossible) between 5:30am and 7:00am.

Hello

I also went by Cherry Creek State Park. I didn't see the Red necked
Grebe but didn't have a scope. Without one, it is hopeless as most of
the Western Grebes were in the center of the reservoir. I thought I saw
a Swamp Sparrow again in the cattails by the bird platform. Only short
glimpses, so I am not saying for sure. A flock of 14 Sandhill Cranes
flew over about 4:30.

information on it, but wanted to get it out there to see if anyone in CO
knew about it or was nearby and wanted to go check.

Post was put up around 11:30 last night.

>ROSS'S GULL at John Martin Reservoir!!

I just got a call from Brandon Percival and Mark Peterson (there still
driving home). They had a 15 minute look at an adult basic ROSS'S GULL!!
This would be a second state record for this species. I believe the first
state record was a bird found at Jumbo Reservoir back in April of 1980 (I
think).

Brandon said that he'd post details late tonight.

Chasers, get ready, get set...

Hello cobirders;

I updated CoBus photo library with photos of Hermit Thrush and Rock Wren, Rocky
Mountain Arsenal. Red necked Grebe Sunday at Cherry Creek was in group of
Western Grebes that swam close to Cottonwood Creek Loop. Have not had time to
look at photos yet, at least a witness shot, it was raining pretty hard.

Later.......out the door owling!

My trip reports are now at:

Hello birders,

When I arrived at Barr Lake S.P. this morning, two Sabine's Gulls both
adults were flying around the northern end. I searched for a Lesser
Black-backed Gull for over an hour but never found it. I did finally
find a Common Loon. the loon stayed at the far end most of the day.

Rebecca, I looked for Burrowing Owls along the DIA owl drive but couldn't
find any. Your maybe right, they have left. We did find a lone Lapland
Longspur among a flock of 200 Horned Larks at 114th avenue.

INFO 14 Oct <a href="#"> Saturday birding around Denver</a> [Richard Stevens ] <br> Subject: Saturday birding around Denver
From: Richard Stevens <birdertoo AT hotmail.com>
Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2007 03:04:
Hello cobirders;

After a successful week of searching for Sprague's Pipit on Colorados Eastern
Plains, I enjoyed a successful Saturday of birding around Denver in spite of
the weather. Partly cloudy skies in the morning turned to heavy rain by late
afternoon.

At first light I returned to Rocky Mountain Arsenal (Adams County) to see if I
could find the Northern Waterthrush that Bryan Ehlmann reported on Wednesday. I
also wanted to cover all 7.8 miles of trails open to the public. My first stop
was the northwest corner of Lake Ladora (which is just behind the Visitors
Center). Guess it was not my first stop as I watched and photographed 2 Rock
Wrens fluttering about behind the Center.

At Ladora, I counted at least 51 sparrows in the tall weeds just north of the
trail. Most were White-crowned Sparrows, however the White-throated Sparrow
popped up several times. Two Song Sparrows also joined the group. A dozen
American Goldfinches flew around feeding on the thistles also. The several tall
cottonwood trees at this corner only had Yellow-rumped Warblers (about 7)
today.

I continued clockwise around the lake. No Long-eared Owls today in the Russian
Olive grove. The locust grove was also void of birds. Warbler migration is
definitely on the downside or over here. I scoped the canal at the northeast
corner for about 30 minutes before giving up on a Northern Waterthrush
sighting.

Once I arrived at Peoria and 64th avenue, I continued south to the junction
with the Woodland Trail. I took the detour to the Rod and Gun Club Ponds. The
ponds are dry and only a few flickers were found along the trail. A Rock Wren
searched for food under the bird blind on the western end of the ponds.

Back on the Woodland Trail (now west of Peoria) it goes through several locust
and tall cottonwood groves. I counted 2 dozen+ Dark-eyed Juncos (which included
Oregon, Pink-sided, and Slate-colored). When I reached the junction with the
Havana Ponds trail, I turned south again.

Havana Ponds was the busiest place today. Hundreds of ducks, 2 American White
Pelicans, American Coots, 2 Western Grebes, and 1 Pied-billed Grebe were
observed here. Ducks included nothing uncommon (Mallard, Gadwall, Northern
Pintail Duck, American Wigeon, 2 Redhead).

I turned back north and walked the southwestern side of Lake Ladora. A
Peregrine Falcon flew between Havana Ponds & Ladora during my walk. Another
flock of 67 sparrows were in the tall weeds at Ladora. This flock was again
mostly White-crowned Sparrows, but also included several American Tree
Sparrows.

The highlight of my walk was found at the western edge of Ladora. First I heard
the clicking of a thrush and later located a late migrating Hermit Thrush. The
Thrush acted like a Sanderling and ran up and down gathering insects on a small
sandy beach area. I took some of my best Hermit Thrush photos (as usually I
only get small glimpses of them deep in woods).

After Rocky Mountain Arsenal, I headed over to Cherry Creek Reservoir
(Arapahoe). I was pouring rain, however I managed to see the Lesser
Black-backed Gull flying around the center of the lake. American White Pelican
numbers have increased as have Western Grebes. If a Sabine's Gull is still
there, I could not locate it.

My final stop of the day was Barr Lake (Adams). I got the text message from the
CoBus RBA text message service and wanted to see if I could find the gulls
reported earlier in the day by Ira Sanders. When I arrived at the boat ramp,
2-4 Sabine's Gulls were flying around about 200 yards north. It took a while,
but I finally got the Lesser Black-backed Gull in my scope. It started to rain
pretty hard, but I managed to find at least one Common Loon before packing it
in for the day.

It is 3:00am and we are headed out owling at Golden Gate Canyon State Park and
Rollinsville area. There is no wind on the east side of Denver.

Hello all,

A western slope birder saw a Dusky Grouse in downtown Paonia and asked about
other encounters in urban areas.

I put photos of a Dusky Grouse Attack that was featured in a June, 2006
story in "Colorado Field Notes" on the "recent witness photos" link on the
CoBus photo library. The Grouse jumped up on the hood of the car and looked
into the car. There was a dog just inside. Later the ranger got out of the
car and was attacked by the grouse. You can access the page directing at:
http://home.att.net/~birdertoo/recentwitnessphotos.htm

The other photo is of a Dusky Grouse that came out of the woods everyday for
about 2 weeks at Loveland Ski Basin.

Enjoy and good birding!

Gary Z & I birded some eastern Denver reservoirs today. At Aurora Res.,
Arapahoe County we didn't find any unusual gulls, but we did find a Savannah
Sparrow and 2 American Tree Sparrows. We didn't find much at Quincy Res.
and headed to Barr Lake, Adams County. Just north of mile marker 8.0 we
found a Green tailed Towhee and another Tree Sparrow.

As many have already stated, Sandhill Cranes flew overhead everywhere we
stopped. Maybe they heard about the Kids Sandhill Crane Festival this
weekend at the San Luis Valley National Wildlife Refuges and are hurrying
down.

Threemile Creek Tamarisk Removal Project (Roaring Fork Conservancy)
8:30 am. Meet at: Sopris Elementary School, Glenwood Springs,
Colorado MAP. Join Roaring Fork Conservancy, Ferdinand Hayden Chapter
of Trout Unlimited, and Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers, and be part
of a broad coalition of organizations working to reverse the spread
of tamarisk along the Roaring Fork River. This invasive noxious weed
destroys native habitat in the riparian zone critical to 80% of our
wildlife. Tamarisk is one of the most wide-spread noxious riparian
weeds in the western United States. Participants will help with brush
removal, some cutting, and hauling cuttings along Three mile Creek
and the Roaring Fork River in Glenwood Springs. Coffee and breakfast
will be provided as well as lunch around 1 pm. Participants should

colorful season in and around Pueblo Mountain Park. The aspens should
be turning their signature gold, and the soft reds and oranges of the
oaks should be in full swing as well. We'll be accessing the Squirrel
Creek Trail and Dome Rock Canyon west of Beulah via the park's

Natural Area. Our walks and studies will focus on birds, wildflowers,
mammals, river morphology, and the effects of time and human
habitation on the riparian area. Bring a notebook, binoculars if you
have them, and your enthusiasm. Call for details about location and
parking. Open to everyone; handicapped accessible; no registration
required.

Belmar Historic Park (Denver Fld Ornith)

Canyon Drive. Meet at group picnic shelter. Join volunteer
naturalists Sue Hirschfeld, Ellen Smith, and Cathy Koczela for a 1.3-
mile moderate hike along the Lichen Loop Trail to learn how this
scenic landscape has changed over time. The tales told in the rocks
span over 200 million years, from ancient sand dunes to tidal flats
to riverbeds where dinosaurs roamed. The rocks also determine the
shape and ecology of the present landscape, and the plants and
wildlife we find here.

From: "Gary Lefko" <lefkogt AT coloradobirder.info>

630-800am

This morning we noticed about 500 cranes flying at the horizon south
about one mile east. Flying so low I knew they roosted nearby. I
hopped in car knowing where they probably roosted last night.

Sure enough at Weld CR 102/37 SE and NW corners the plowed and planted
fields were flooded by cranes--many taking off to continue their
journey south.

Estimate 5,000-7,500+--easily. We (Nunn) seem to be a flyway this year.

I sat at intersection with hundreds of cranes flying just above me and
many more taking off south.

Thanks
