Hello cobirders;

Ray Berman and I birded in Clear Creek and Summit Counties Monday. Barrow's
Goldeneyes continue at the Blue River Water Treatment Plant in Silverthorne,
Summit County.

We had to visit Loveland Pass (Clear Creek County) twice. We had no luck in
finding White-tailed Ptarmigan in the morning. Drove down to Georgetown for
lunch and some birding around town (found a few Red Crossbills).

In the afternoon, we returned to Loveland Pass and eventually found 2 Ptarmigan
up the west side trail!

After dark we drove to Montezuma and listened for owls. We heard a Northern
Pygmy-Owl east of Montezuma Road. We listened at the St Johns, Hunkidori and
Argentine Trails. However we did not go up any of the snow covered trails.

Continued Good Birding!

From: Richard Stevens <birdertoo AT hotmail.com>
Date: Sun, 7 Feb 2010 22:22:40 -0700
Hello cobirders;

On Saturday, I returned to Rocky Mountain Arsenal when they opened at 7:30 am.
Last Thursday, I missed the Harris's Sparrow in a 1.5 hour wait. The day was
warm and many bees were mobbing the feeders north of the Visitor's Center. Only
a few birds flew into the trees above the feeders. None would engage the many
bees.

I figured that early in the morning it would be too cold for bees. This was the
case Saturday morning. A few birds perched in the trees at 7:30 am. At 8:00 am
however, a flock of 30+ Dark-eyed Juncos flew in and attacked the seeds under
both sets (of two) feeders.

Shortly thereafter, the Harris's Sparrow also made an appearance. The sparrow
eventually went under both sets of feeders from 8:00 to 8:19 am (still there
when I departed).

Next, I visited the South Platte River at 88th Avenue and Colorado Blvd. The 3
Long-tailed Ducks were still on the northern West Gravel Lake. The pair of
Barrow's Goldeneyes was on the South Platte River near the green/white tower. A
second male Barrow's Goldeneye was on East Gravel Lakes.

After lunch, I drove by Red Rocks Park. The Golden-crowned Sparrow was under
the platform feeder behind the Trading Post.

My birding day ended with a drive around the DIA Owl Loop. No Short-eared Owls,
three Northern Harriers worked the fields south of 128th Avenue.

Continued Good Birding!

Subject: Birding Along the Front Range Sunday
From: Richard Stevens <birdertoo AT hotmail.com>
Date: Sun, 7 Feb 2010 22:01:12 -0700
Hello cobirders;

Today was quite different from yesterday with colder temperatures and snow off
and on.

Ray Berman and I saw 3 species of Rosy Finches this morning at Fawnbrook Inn at
Allenspark (Boulder County). There were not many finches, but at least 1 of
each.

Ray and I found the Red-shouldered Hawk in less than 10 minutes this morning at
the Wildlife Area/open space north of the Kodak Watchable Wildlife Area (Weld
County).

We ended our birding day with poor visibility at Valmont Reservoir (Boulder
County). Identification of many gulls was missed. We did pick out a 1st cycle
Great Black-backed Gull, an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull and at least one 1st
cycle Thayer's Gull. If the Iceland Gull is still around, we did not see it.

Continued Good Birding!

Subject: Rosy Finches verses Evening Grosbeak behavior
From: Richard Stevens <birdertoo AT hotmail.com>

Hello Beverly and cobirders;

>>>>>>Has anybody else noticed that the when the Rosy-Finches are around, there
are no Evening Grosbeaks...and when the Finches take off, the Grosbeaks return?
Weird...

Beverly Jensen

At my favorite mountain feeders, the Evening Grosbeaks, when they show up,
scare the Rosy Finches away. Unless the weather is bad, the Evening Grosbeaks
only show up the first hour of daylight. While Rosy Finches can show up anytime
during the day.

Now that I think about it, that is similar to my experience at the Fawnbrook
Inn feeders in Allenspark.

Just a different experience than yours. Enjoy all of them especially when all
can be difficult to find at any time!

Just to mention, that the Colorado Birding Society is moving (see below.
Keeping both sites (old and new) up is quite time consuming. The old site is
not going to last much longer.

It started snowing here just about sun-up and the Rosy-Finches arrived
just a bit later. I swear, they're like clockwork! As they often do,
they came and went several times and disappeared for a while. While
they were gone, I watched 30+ Evening Grosbeaks under the feeders.
Through the day, there were 100-200 Rosies at a time.
Has anybody else noticed that the when the Rosy-Finches are around,
there are no Evening Grosbeaks...and when the Finches take off, the
Grosbeaks return? Weird...
I got a couple pretty good pictures of that rascally woodpecker, too.
Yup, the Lewis's is still coming to the feeders. You can see the photos
on my blog, here .
Also around are Cassin's Finch, a Song Sparrow, that tropical (!)
White-winged Dove and a Sharp-shinned Hawk that seems to regularly buzz
the yard and almost took the lights out of an Evening Grosbeak...also
got photos of the bird in a box, just before release.
It's a birdy yard...if you're in the area, give me a call and and stop
by!

Subject: Massive Barrow's flock in Carbondale (Garfield County)þ
From: Dick Filby <dickfilby AT hotmail.com>
Date: Sun, 7 Feb 2010 19:17:20 +0000

Hi all,

Whilst most of the household went skiing/boarding yesterday, I enjoyed
a few hours birding with some of our house guests visiting from "out
east" (escaping their blizzard back home).

An imm Bald Eagle (Pitkin Co) in a tree above the Roaring Fork
valley opposite the turn off Hwy82 to the Watson Divide was the first
of at least five we saw (the others, 2 adults and 2 imms, were all
around Carbondale - Garfield Co - later in the day, as was a single
adult Golden Eagle). A Rough-legged Hawk sat on a
fence along Brush Creek Road (Pitkin Co) - the first R-leg I have seen
in Pitkin this winter. The feeders at Al Levantin's house were visited
by Mountain and Black-capped Chickadees and a single Downy Woodpecker.
We surmised that his regular Cooper's Hawk has probably been hanging
out there quite a bit recently as the seed is lasting a very long
time....

Around Carbondale ducks provided the highlights.. A single drake Wood Duck
rested on the ice on the "northwestern pond" at Ranch at Roaring Fork, where
there was also a single female Barrow's Goldeneye, a few Buffleheads,
Ring-necked Ducks and Lesser Scaup, but no sign of the Hooded Mergansers.

Nearby however was the treat of the day, at 5pm, when we watched
Coryell Ranch Pond from CR109 with our telescopes as usual (altho' I
have access to this private ranch I do not want to disturb this small
pond which is only visible from inside the ranch at extremely close
range). The treat?? It was a massive flock at least 192 Barrow's Goldeneyes
that had come into roost, along with just a few other ducks (6
Ring-necked Ducks, 8 Mallard and 10 Common Goldeneye).. Does anyone
know of a bigger gathering in Colorado, ever? NB: This pond is only
being used as a roost site and not every day. The birds, when present
at all, arrive late and leave early. Indeed most evenings there are no
birds there before dark.

We looked long and hard for a Northern Pygmy Owl in almost every
location that I have ever encountered them hereabout before, but as has
been my luck for the past two winters.. came up with none all day!

Hello cobirders;

Ray Berman and I birded Pawnee National Grasslands today. Besides Lapland
Longspurs and Short-eared Owls we had a Swift Fox as a target animal. The Swift
Fox was found along Weld County Road 96 (Chestnut-collared Longspur location
for those who know the area).

It required a drive north of Crow Valley Campgrounds to CR 122 and then west to
the ponds to find a couple of Lapland Longspurs.

We ended our birding day by watching Short-eared Owls along Weld County Road
48, south side of Lower Latham Reservoir.

The Red Shouldered Hawk is still hanging around the Kodak Watchable Wildlife
area. Audrey and I spotted it this morning along the Poudre trail about 1/2
mile east of the parking lot. The hawk was in a group of trees where the trail
makes a sharp turn to the east.

Hi birders,

This morning we finished with our three consecutive all night Eastern
Screech-Owl counts in our second Denver Urban Owl Count. This year we only had
six participants however still managed to cover most of the territory. Final
Eastern Screech-Owl counts will be written up in a future "Colorado Field
Notes".

Thanks to all!

This morning, Richard Stevens searched for the Harris's Sparrow reported at
Rocky Mountain Arsenal. In 1.5 hours he didn't see the sparrow come to the
feeders. Richard reports 3 Long-tailed Ducks and 3 Barrow's Goldeneyes in the
88th avenue and Colorado blvd area of the South Platte Corridor. All but one
male Barrow's Goldeneye were on the northern West Gravel Lake (see February's
"Colorado Field Notes" or the CoBus website for directions). The other male was
seen on East Gravel Lake. Later the pair of Barrow's Goldeneye from West Gravel
Lake flew down to the Platte River upstream, south of the green and white water
tower.

Hi birders,

The Colorado Birding Society is moving its website to new servers. Both
websites will still be updated for about a week. Then the worldnet website will
close down.

The new address is:

coloradobirdingsociety.net16.net

So please change your bookmarks. Hope to see you on the new website.

The new server will allow future improvements to the CoBus website. Planned
improvements include finally putting the Colorado Birds database of 150 years
of bird sightings on the internet. Hopefully it will allow birders to not only
see and search past sightings but add their sightings. Richard Stevens and
Bryan Ehlmann are taking crash courses on PHP language and MySQL databases.
Presently all our databases are Microsoft Access so it may take a couple of
months.

Thanks to all for your participation! See you on

Snowy owls come from the far north where a good part of the year, daylight or
night time only last 4 hours per day.  To call them diurnal is correct, to
call them nocturnal is correct, to call them crepuscular is correct.  If this
species confined itself to only one of these times, they would not get enough
to eat in some parts of the year.

Perhaps ....wonder what he  (Sibley) means exactly by "to a lesser extent
Snowy Owls are normally active in daylight? "  To a lesser extent and normally
is  also a contradiction in terms.

I checked other field guides I have last evening  and some say diurnal, some
say "active during day", some say nocturnal. Anyone know if  there are
publications out there dedicated solely to owls? I also read that the main
reason the Snowy  Owl leaves the tundra is a shortage of their main source of
food...lemmings. That lemmings tend to over produce then disease sets in and
they die  off. No mention of how / why the lemmings commit mass suicide. So
it seems if you depend upon lemmings for your main food source it is either
feast or famine.

As I posted earlier, the only Snowy Owl I have ever seen in CO had apparently
just been killed by a vehicle on HWY 24 near  the KS border  and its body
was still warm when I found it in late AM, a mouse still grasped firmly in its
talons. This was in winter by the way. So,  in my own experience,  (not
based on anything I have read)  Snowy Owls can be found in CO as far east as
the KS border, are active in daylight hours and hunt mice. Though I was not
there to witness its moment of death or how it saw its prey, my guess is that
it was perched on a telephone pole alongside the HWY.  To be perfectly honest
I have long been living under the assumption that we have Snowy  Owls in CO
and that they are active during daylight. The one I found was mostly white with
very little dark markings. I am not a CO native---in fact I was on my way back
home to CO from my native state of PA when I found the Snowy Owl.  It was not
until I saw all the posts

here about the sighting of the Snowy Owl in El Paso County, CO that I realized
how rare this is.

Mr. Sibley contradicts himself in hid Guide to Bird Life and Behavior page 341:
"Many owls avoid competition with diurnal predators, such as hawk, by feeding
exclusively at night. A few species feed during the day and night, or
concentrate their foraging at dawn and dusk, but only the Nothern Hawk Owl, the
pygmy owls and to a lesser extent Snowy, Burrowing, and Short-eared Owls are
normally active in daylight."

Perhaps he should correct himself.

Very interesting that you say the Snowy Owl is not nocturnal.  I consider
dawn and dusk to be associated with the nocturnal hours of day. I would
consider it very odd to see almost any owl active at mid-day.  One
publication, the  National Audubon Society's  "The Sibley Guide to Birds" p.
275 in referring to the Great Gray Owl and the Snowy Owl states "Individuals of
both species seen far to the south of normal range are often starved and
stressed for food, and thus active in daylight. Healty birds are mainly
nocturnal, like other owls.

Snowy Owls are diurnal.  They are normally active between dawn and dusk.  It
is the most incredible bird I've ever seen.

Any thoughts on why this normally nocturnal species is being seen so frequently
during daylight hours?  I have read that when the Snow Owl is sited out of its
range during daylight that it is distressed due to lack of prey.

We live near Iliff and Chambers which is a few blocks from a drain coming out
of Cherry Creek State Park near Yale. This morning we spotted 15 - 20 Bushtits
in and around our yard. We spotted them last year on Feb. 2 so they are a day
late. They have come the past four years from the middle of Jan. to the end of
March. Of course, that just depends if we happen to looking out when they come
through. The first hint is the little funny sounds they make while foraging.

Yesterday afternoon at Banner Lakes near Keenesburg in Weld County, a
nice group of people showed me a pair of long-eared owls between the
markers for ponds 6 and 7. They were closer to the marker for pond 6.

On another note, where are good places to find evening grosbeaks,
Cassin's finches and golden-crowned kinglets?

My wife and I drove down to near Peyton today and, along with about 20 other
people, observed the snowy owl on a rooftop and later in an open field. this
was about noon until 1:30 pm.. the owl was on the rooftop when we arrived, but
the homeowner went near the back of the house and the owl flew down into a
field nearby. The owl poses as if it were a celebrity, turning its head in all
directions and sitting still for photo shoots! There were about 5-7 parked cars
filled with birders and photographers.

Hello cobirders;

Sorry for the many emails. Each is being "Bcc" to different groups so I could
not combine them.

I updated the "basic self guiding grouse tour" at the "Grouse Information" link
on the CoBus website. It has been updated for changes in access in 2010 and so
provide an easier way to get directions to the suggested locations to visit.
Locations suggested are those most likely for success (although, on the CoBus
guided tours, we do have several backups for most sites).

Also updated were the North Park Greater Sage-Grouse Tours and the Wray Museum
Greater Prairie-Chicken Tours. The North Park tours just started taking
applications this week. The Wray Greater Prairie-Chicken tours are filling up
fast. Both have limited number of participants.

Misc:

I added photos of the East Gravel Lake Long-tailed Duck to the "recent witness
photos" link at the bottom of the Bird Photos Library page of the CoBus
website.

Subject: Lakes and Ponds of the South Platte River at 88th Avenue Area
From: Richard Stevens <birdertoo AT hotmail.com>
Date: Fri, 29 Jan 2010 19:08:48 -0700
Hello cobirders;

I visited the Adams County assessor's office the other day to obtain the names
of the various bodies of water along the South Platte River. Almost each lake
has a different owner and jurisdiction so finding the official names has been a
several month search.

Lakes and ponds from Adams County Fairgrounds to I270 will be on a map in
February's "Colorado Field Notes".

The summary for the 88th avenue and S. Platte River area is:

Section name of the first pond north of 88th Avenue and east of the Platte
River (cannot be seen well from Platte River bike path: 88th Avenue Open Space
Pond (a.k.a. Coley Gravel Pit).

The pond north of the Platte and east of above is one of the 4 Coley Gravel Pit
Ponds.

South of 88th Avenue:

West side of the Platte River are three section lakes. Northern West Gravel
Lake, then Southern West Gravel Lake and seldom visited (small) Western West
Gravel Lake.

East side of the Platte River, just south 88th Avenue is East Gravel Lake. The
larger lake south of this one is Tani Reservoir. East of East Gravel Lake and
Dahlia is section name Dahlia Pond.

South of I224 (and Tani Reservoir) is a small lake, section name Engineer Lake.

The newest lake which is south of Interstate 76 is Brannon Pit #5

Hello cobirders;

I have been busy writing and editing February's "Colorado Field Notes", but did
find time for a few hours of birding today.

Bryan Ehlmann and I went over to Colorado Blvd and 88th Avenue to scout for
ducks for the DFOs Trip tomorrow.

The three Long-tailed Ducks were along the southern ice line at the Northern
West Gravel Lakes.

We first checked East Gravel Lake and found no Long-tailed Ducks. East Gravel
Lake did have three species of mergansers, a few Ruddy Ducks and a Redhead
(along with the usually many Common Goldeneyes, American Coots, Pied-billed
Grebes, etc).

A pair of Barrow's Goldeneyes was with many ducks on the South Platte River
(north of the green/white tower). A first year male Barrow's Goldeneye was on
Tani Reservoir. A first year Bald Eagle stood on the ice watching the many
ducks and gulls at the southern end of Tani.

We walked north of 88th Avenue and found a Prairie Falcon watching the 88th
Avenue Open Space Pond (a.k.a. Coley Gravel Pit).

At Picadilly Road and 152nd Avenue (Bromley Road), about 18 Great-tailed
Grackles were at the first house south of the tree nursery (around 3:00 pm). At
5:05 pm, they had moved to the tall cottonwoods along 152nd, just east of the
Nursery.

No Short-eared Owls were found when the DIA Owl Loop was driven after sunset.

Subject: Search for Pygmy Owls
From: Bryan Ehlmann <graybirder AT hotmail.com>
Date: Fri, 29 Jan 2010 05:19:25 -0700
Hello birders,

Rich Stevens and I were determined to get a Northern Pygmy Owl photo Thursday.
By the way, we didn't. Driving up and down Harold Holt's favorite Pygmy Owl
road three times before sunrise didn't work.

At Reynolds Park, a Northern Pygmy-Owl called along the Songbird Trail at about
halfway between the two parking lots. It called twice for about eight hoots
each time, but heck if we could find it. A Dusky Grouse was seen walking the
forest tree line south of the clearing behind the Elkhorn Trail at the western
parking lot.

At Pine Valley Ranch Park, a Pygmy Owl called east of the Parkview switchbacks.
Again, both of us looked at every tree but couldn't find the little bird. Rich
found a Three-toed Woodpecker up the hill south of Pine Lake.

We scouted for tomorrow's trip to Guanella Pass and found that we couldn't get
close enough to the top for a try on snowshoes to reach the summit. It would
have been at least an eight-mile trip. No Pygmy Owls called at about a dozen
stops around Grant.

Finally, we tried Mount Falcon Park. Not a sign was found of any Pygmy Owls or
Dusky Grouse. The underbrush that offered shelter for Dusky Grouse has been
mostly cleared away. We did find the highlight of the day when a Northern
Goshawk flew from the northern woods, down the long open field below the
overlook.

Subject: Reducing aircraft-wildlife strikes at airports
From: Matt Kennedy <kennedym2009 AT yahoo.com>

Dear fellow birding enthusiasts,
As a lifelong birder and professional aviator for over 16 years, I am
conducting a nation-wide study on the level of community support for the
mitigation measures used at airports to reduce the wildlife strike hazard to
commercial aircraft.  Getting input from different regions of the country is
necessary to gauge whether there are regional differences due to varying bird
populations or possible high profile incidents involving wildlife strikes on
aircraft.

Responses are submitted electronically to a database that does not
identify users, so your answers will be completely confidential.  Findings
will be released only as analyzed data or summaries in which no individual’s
answers can be identified.  Please take a few moments to share your opinions
and experiences.  I appreciate you taking time from your busy schedule to
contribute toward this important research about community views on wildlife
mitigation measures at airports.

The survey can be accessed at:   https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/XTVS225

If you would like a summary of my findings, please send me your e-mail address
at kennedym2009 AT yahoo.com.  Once the study is complete, I will e-mail the
summary to you.

Best Regards,

Subject: Rosy-finches and Lewis's Woody in Huerfano County
From: "goldiloucks" <goldiloucks AT yahoo.com>

Well, we got half an inch of snow last night...and the Rosies are back; all
three species. A huge flock wheels down from the trees and right back up...back
and forth; they don't stay on the ground long. Sometimes they line up by the
dozens and dozens on the phone wires.

I'm thinking they won't stay long this time; the snow has already quit falling.
They did this a few weeks ago; arrived after a light snow, but didn't stay
long; different than the week before Christmas when they stayed for nearly a
full week! Darnit...I tossed a lot of both black-oil and Finches Feast (a mix
of nyjer and canary seed by Purina which is cheaper than pure nyjer) around the
ground under the feeders for those Rosies; I think it's the EUCDs that are
going to feast!

And the Rosies seem spookier. The yard is full of Magpies and a few Blue Jays
in the morning (I feed them 'fat-worms' and peanuts-in-the-shell). Even though
I've been holding back the kibble, the Lewis's Woodpecker is still frequenting
the suet feeder...though he has not been as aggressive. The several Flickers in
the area still come, as do all the chickadees, nuthatches and creepers, I'm
happy to say.

Of course, there IS only one of the Lewis's, so far. Perhaps if I keep holding
back on the kibble...it will move on; I imagine a whole family could be more
intimidating and territorial.

As always, feel free to call if you're in the area and want to bird my yard.

Oh, and reports of the Roadrunner's demise were totally premature ...even after
a pile o'feathers was found, he's been seen alive in the yard where he hangs!
Yippieeeeeeeeee...

 Birders,

My wife and I have abandoned Gunnison as a permanent home. It's just too cold.
Centennial at 22 degrees is much much warmer. On the moving trip this weekend
we got to see some good birds.

Jan 22, Friday
We saw the Snowy Owl east of Colorado Springs. We didn't have the time to stop
at Pueblo Reservoir. Found Juniper Titmouse at Brush Hollow Wildlife Area on
the way east.

Jan 23, Saturday
We made the trip up to Windsor and saw the Red-shouldered Hawk at the Wildlife
Area path north of the Poudre River and the Kodak Wildlife Area. Scoped Valmont
Reservoir from the park overlook south of the reservoir. It was probably too
early in the afternoon and no unusual gulls were seen.

Jan 24, Sunday
The Golden-crowned Sparrow was still at Red Rocks Park. Barrow's Goldeneyes and
Long-tailed Ducks at 88th avenue and the Platte River.

Jan 25, Monday
Carol and I made it over to Banner Lake Wildlife Area and saw 2 Long-eared Owls
between ponds 7 and 8.

It's not a bad start to our year lists!

Subject: Long-tailed Ducks of the South Platte at 88th avenue, Adams County
From: Richard Stevens <birdertoo AT hotmail.com>
Date: Mon, 25 Jan 2010 14:35:08 -0700
Hello cobirders;

I returned to the South Platte River at 88th avenue to try and solve the minor
mystery of how many Long-tailed Ducks are wintering there?

This morning two Long-tailed Ducks were back on the northern West Gravel Lakes,
both appear to be juveniles. One of these had disappeared for a day or two and
returned this weekend. Southern West Gravel Lake had been frozen, so I never
walked down to see if it had opened up and provided a place for one of the
juvenile Long-tailed Ducks to feed.

The adult female Long-tailed Duck was this morning on East Gravel Lake. In the
five times I have looked, she has always been here. Perhaps others have seen
her move?

I suggest anyone searching for the Long-tailed Ducks to provide or at least
guess at an age. There is no penalty for being incorrect. If there is a fourth
Long-tailed Duck I would like to pin it down.

The pair of Barrow's Goldeneyes were again on the Platte River within 50 yards
of the green and white tower. Another male Barrow's Goldeneye was on East
Gravel Lake.

Best of birding!

Hello cobirders;

January 24, 2010

For the third day in a row, weather (wind and snow) has prevented us from
trying for White-tailed Ptarmigan on Loveland Pass. Instead, three of us drove
to Jackson Reservoir (Morgan County). Winds were 20+ mph with gusts measuring
38+ mph.

Not the best conditions to find any birds. We did find a couple of Lapland
Longspurs within 3 miles north of Jackson Wildlife Area. An Eastern Screech-Owl
was heard somewhere along the western side of Jackson Reservoir (around the
Campgrounds).

Below is the account of our owl search on Saturday (from the CoBus trip blog):

"January 23, 2010

Gary Weston: Rich Stevens and I planned to search for owls most of the day in
Boulder County.

We started about an hour before civil twilight at Meadows Park in Lyons; no
owls. Northern Pygmy-Owls have nested in the area in past years.

No Northern Pygmy-Owls were found at Fawnbrook Inn. Just after sunrise, all
three species of Rosy Finches came to the feeders. An equal mix of Gray-crowned
and Brown-capped Rosy Finches and 2 Black Rosy Finches were seen among 60 Rosy
Finches.

The feeders at Fawnbrook Inn also attracted Pine Siskins, Hairy and Downy
Woodpeckers, Steller's Jays, Red-breasted and White-breasted Nuthatches and
Mountain Chickadees.

At Wild Basin, we walked into Copeland Lake, found few birds. As expected, the
lake was frozen and snow covered. We heard no woodpeckers and saw no birds
along the creek below the road.

Back South in Ward, we found 14 Evening Grosbeaks and a pair of Pine Grosbeaks.

We went only a little ways up the road to Brainard Lake. A most likely Northern
Goshawk had flown across the road. During the stop, Richard heard and later
found a Three-toed Woodpecker.

A drive around Nederland didn't find many birds other than Crows and Common
Ravens. We were not able to locate any feeders. Winds were very strong 35+ mph.
Barker Reservoir was of course frozen and snow covered.

We took Highway 119 to Rollinsville again searching for Rosy Finches. But none
were found. Richard had three locations of previous Pygmy Owl sightings. No
owls were found.

Returning to Nederland for a late lunch, we took highway 72 to Gross Reservoir.
Again three owl locations were checked, no owls.

On the way to the northeast corner of Gross Reservoir a flock of 16 Red
Crossbills caught our eyes. We kept on when no White-winged Crossbills were
found among them.

We drove through the subdivision at the northeast corner of Gross found a flock
of about 50 Cedar Waxwings. Unfortunately no Bohemian Waxwings were among them.

Reversing directions, we steered back south to the ranger's home at the
southeast corner of Gross Reservoir. We hiked both the south and east side
roads this time finding a Northern Pygmy-Owl about 500 yards west of the
ranger's home!

From there we followed highway 72 to White Ranch Open Space. Finding no Pygmy
Owls at two previous locations, we returned to Denver."

Hi all,

A snowy morning heralded some increased feeder activity here in Carbondale,
with the main highlight being c45 Pinyon Jays. The American Tree Sparrow
continues, as does the Sharp-shinned Hawk that caught another House Finch
today. Yesterday's Northern Shrike was not seen again today.

Just downvalley there were 57 BARROW'S GOLDENEYES on Coryell Ranch Ponds late
afternoon. Yesterday evening there was an adult Trumpeter Swan there (of
presumed captive origin).

Perhaps ....wonder what he (Sibley) means exactly by "to a lesser extent Snowy
Owls are normally active in daylight? " To a lesser extent and normally is also
a contradiction in terms.

I checked other field guides I have last evening and some say diurnal, some say
"active during day", some say nocturnal. Anyone know if there are publications
out there dedicated solely to owls? I also read that the main reason the Snowy
Owl leaves the tundra is a shortage of their main source of food...lemmings.
That lemmings tend to over produce then disease sets in and they die off. No
mention of how / why the lemmings commit mass suicide. So it seems if you
depend upon lemmings for your main food source it is either feast or famine.

As I posted earlier, the only Snowy Owl I have ever seen in CO had apparently
just been killed by a vehicle on HWY 24 near the KS border and its body was
still warm when I found it in late AM, a mouse still grasped firmly in its
talons. This was in winter by the way. So, in my own experience, (not based on
anything I have read) Snowy Owls can be found in CO as far east as the KS
border, are active in daylight hours and hunt mice. Though I was not there to
witness its moment of death or how it saw its prey, my guess is that it was
perched on a telephone pole alongside the HWY. To be perfectly honest I have
long been living under the assumption that we have Snowy Owls in CO and that
they are active during daylight. The one I found was mostly white with very
little dark markings. I am not a CO native---in fact I was on my way back home
to CO from my native state of PA when I found the Snowy Owl. It was not until I
saw all the posts here about the sighting of the Snowy Owl in El Paso County,
CO that I realized how rare this is.

Mr. Sibley contradicts himself in hid Guide to Bird Life and Behavior page
341:

"Many owls avoid competition with diurnal predators, such as hawk, by feeding
exclusively at night. A few species feed during the day and night, or
concentrate their foraging at dawn and dusk, but only the Nothern Hawk Owl, the
pygmy owls and to a lesser extent Snowy, Burrowing, and Short-eared Owls are
normally active in daylight."

  Perhaps he should correct himself.

Very interesting that you say the Snowy Owl is not nocturnal. I consider dawn
and dusk to be associated with the nocturnal hours of day. I would consider it
very odd to see almost any owl active at mid-day. One publication, the National
Audubon Society's "The Sibley Guide to Birds" p. 275 in referring to the Great
Gray Owl and the Snowy Owl states "Individuals of both species seen far to the
south of normal range are often starved and stressed for food, and thus active
in daylight. Healty birds are mainly nocturnal, like other owls.

Snowy Owls are diurnal. They are normally active between dawn and dusk. It is
the most incredible bird I've ever seen.

Any thoughts on why this normally nocturnal species is being seen so
frequently during daylight hours? I have read that when the Snow Owl is sited
out of its range during daylight that it is distressed due to lack of prey.
