A large flock swooped in and stayed about fifteen minutes. They returned about an hour later and again stayed just a short time. Debbie Moore Wildridge Subdivision Avon, COSubject: Purple Finch and Common Redpoll, Fruita, Mesa Co From: "Dick Filby" <dickfilby AT hotmail.com> Date: Wed, 7 Jan 2009 03:59:24 -0000 Hi all, A Common Redpoll (possible an adult female) and a Purple Finch (female / immature) are intermittently visiting the feeders of Garnett and Raymond Plotner in Fruita. Neither bird is easy! We waited four and a half hours this morning at a unwaveringly frigid 7F and failed to see the Common Redpoll, whilst the Purple Finch only showed about 3 times in that period, each time for just a couple of minutes. The Common Redpoll finally showed at 2.35pm - and then only for a couple of minutes. The Plotners are currently happy to welcome birders look for the birds. To avoid disturbing the birds, they ask that you preferably watch their feeders (which are very close to the street) from inside your vehicle. Alternatively Garnett may invite you to watch from inside the house. Their address is 155 N.Cherry St, Fruita. On I-70 going west, take Fruita exit (19), turn right at the light, stay in middle lane at the stop sign at bottom of overpass, proceed straight north past Burger King onto Cherry Street, house is on the left in the first block. Please do not block driveways. Nearby, this afternoon, in Grand Junction, just south of Grand Ave, a single White-winged Dove was in trees on White Ave between N.8th and N.9th with 6 Collared Doves, Many thanks to Ron Lambeth, Larry Arnold and Andrea Robinsong for info and assistance. I have low quality photos of both birds if anyone wants to see them. Thursday, January 22nd at: Poudre Learning Center 8313 West F Street Greeley 6:30 for socializing - 7:00 Program Highly acclaimed local photographer Bill Popejoy will present our program. Bill and Joan Popejoy did photo shoots in south Florida with 2 different professional bird photographers. Wintering birds were shot along the west coast of Florida, including Sanibel Island, and in the Everglades. They were privileged to photograph several seldom seen birds, including a white form of the Great Egret which gave them 30 minutes of nice poses. The original photos were shot on film, then the slides were scanned and enhanced in Photoshop. Bill will demonstrate this process that many of us would like to know more about. This promises to be an excellent program. Please invite friends and neighbors to join us as well. Later I managed a couple of hours out and about locally this afternoon, as the mercury plummeted into single digits by dusk. Several Bald Eagles roosted in their favored trees, as did a Rough-legged Hawk. There are still plenty of Robins, despite the cold and snow.Highlight was close to dusk when at 5pm I scoped Coryell Ranch ponds from the frontage road by Hwy82. A small area of open water remains, and through the smoke haze off the water, I could see a flock of 77 Barrow's Goldeneyes (no other waterfowl at all). This seems to be the best place to see Barrow's in the valley the past couple of winters. Blue Lake (El Jebel) was very poor for ducks early winter, prior to freezing over completely (again) in December. Nearby at the Ranch at Roaring Fork there were a pair of Hooded Mergansers and several Common Goldeneyes, Buffleheads and Ring-necked Ducks.Great way to end the day!Good BirdingDick FilbyCarbondale, Garfield CoSubject: CO habitat stamp From: "Linda Andes-Georges" <andesgeorges AT comcast.net> Date: Sun, 4 Jan 2009 16:22:19 -0700 Dear birding friends-- Happy new year. I would like to remind everyone of the Col. DOW's option to purchase a wildlife habitat stamp for $10.25 (start website https://www4.wildlifelicense.com/co/start.php ). It includes the "Colorado Search and Rescue fee, access to state wildlife areas (SWA) or state trust lands (STL) and helps fund additional habitat for wildlife." I think this is a worthwhile action for starting the year, demonstrating to some degree that we are as interested in habitat as hunters are; and I do not share the viewpoint of a few of you who think (if I remember correctly) that we are somehow being gypped by the government in paying an additional "fee." However I know that most of us do not want to read (again) a thread of pros & cons on government fees, so I will just leave this reminder and say: I'm gonna do it, and if I get stuck somewhere in the wilds with a dead car or a broken ankle--no matter how pleasantly birdy it is out there--I'll be glad I have the rescue license! Good hunting to all... Linda Central Boulder CountySubject: Clear Creek, Adams, & Pueblo Counties From: Mary Lou Ehlmann <mlehl AT yahoo.com> Date: Sun, 4 Jan 2009 14:55:29 -0800 (PST) Hello,

Bryan, Jerry, and I cross-county skied a couple of miles to the top of Guanella Pass. Cold and windy, but 11 White-tailed Ptarmigan made the effort worthwhile! After deciding to abandon Georgetown Saturday morning because of horrible weather (started snowing around midnight), we returned to Denver. After splitting up to get a few hours sleep (I got two), I went over to Rocky Mountain Arsenal (Adams). It was a useless attempt to find the Tundra Swan reported Thursday. I circled Lake Lenore but most of it was frozen (small open area at the western, closest end). The eastern end where the Tundra Swan was observed was completely frozen. It took an hour to circle the lake and make sure there were no birds. Back at the western end, about 15 Common Goldeneyes and 14 Common Mergansers were among a dozen Ring-billed Gulls, one or two California Gulls, and three Herring Gulls. Winds were 22+ mph; gusts to 32 mph; temperatures in the upper 20s. I think my anemometer froze; I was! I met up with Jerry Petrosky and Bill Cryder after Noon. We spent the rest of the day walking the 7.8 mile bike path around Aurora Reservoir. Again many gulls were below the dam. Unfortunately none of the uncommon gulls were here. The southeast corner was best, but required a 4 mile hike to get there. Here we found a Tundra Swan (could it be the Rocky Mountain Arsenal swan?). Two adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls stood off mm 4.0. The strange Gull was with many Ring-billed Gulls, a few California Gulls, and several dozen Herring Gulls off mm 4.5. Land birds including sparrows were really scarce. One flock of American Tree Sparrows (5) at mm 1.5. A couple of Song Sparrows south of the marina. Raptors included 2 Red-tailed Hawks, 1 American Kestrel, and a female Northern Harrier. The new construction along the northern end of the reservoir is not going to help the birding. Someday Aurora Reservoir will be another Cherry Creek Reservoir. Continued Good Birding! Jerry Petrosky, Bill Cryder and I found and photographed an interesting Gull at Aurora Reservoir Saturday. It was slightly larger or similar in size to the nearby Herring Gulls. This bird was quite far away from us. I digiscoped it, but light was terrible except for a short time. The legs were pink and at times looked bright pink (again the light). The mantle was dark, too dark most of the time to be a Western Gull (again bad light?) but at times looked lighter than a Lesser Black-backed Gull. It probably was a small Great Black-backed Gull, but wish we could have observed it under better light. I am not suggesting that anyone rush out there. The Gull population changes throughout the day as the gulls fly back and forth to DADS (Denver Arapahoe Disposal Site. aka. landfill). I have sat out there for eight hours and never observed the same gulls more than once or twice. We are leaving town and will not have the chance to go back out there until Tuesday. I sent photos to a "Gull expert" in California. Hopefully he will shed "light" on the bird. If there is a best time to see most of the gulls, 11:30 to 12:30 seems to be when many gulls fly back from the landfill; other days this is not so much true. The interesting gulls today were at mile marker 4.5 (southeast corner of the reservoir). Actual center point is Silver Plume as then the count circle included Loveland Pass, Guanella Pass, and Echo Lake, Keystone Ski Area. Preliminary Results: Total species: 34 Some birds we expected were missed: Prairie Falcon, American Kestrel, Clark's Nutcracker, Townsend's Solitaire, to name a few. We had planned on staying up there and cross country skiing and owling some more, but weather is horrible. Snow is predicted 4-6 inches and up to 1.5 feet. Winds are pretty strong. As pointed out on the CoBus website, while Guanella pass is closed, it was temporarily open to Lost Silver Dollar Lake trail. Three birders skied to the top of Guanella pass and saw 11 White-tailed Ptarmigan! Another group found 2 White-tailed Ptarmigan on Loveland Pass. A mixed flock of 60 Rosy Finches flew around Silver Plume. We didn't see any this morning. From: Richard Stevens <birdertoo AT hotmail.com> Date: Fri, 2 Jan 2009 04:55:44 -0700 Hello cobirders; January 1, 2009 I enjoyed a fantastic first day of the year! Winds were mild most of the day; temperatures reached into the 50s. At first light I scoped the Dahlia Ponds, Tani Reservoir, West Gravel Lakes, and East Gravel Lake. A Glaucous Gull was temporarily on East Gravel Lake, but flew toward the South Platte River (south of 88th avenue). Later in the morning, I observed the Glaucous Gull fly up and down the Platte from 88th avenue to the mudflats just south of the green/white tower (about a mile south of 88th avenue). It landed briefly on the mudflats, but again took off to the north. I counted 3 male and a female Barrow's Goldeneyes on the Platte below the tower. There was another Goldeneye with a totally orange bill. However, it had the skull shape of a Common Goldeneye and I just could not call it a Barrow's Goldeneye. Returning north, I continued downstream along the Platte River about 200 yards north of 88th avenue. I was looking for the Glaucous Gull. My fourth male Barrow's Goldeneye of the day was about 100 yards north of the 88th avenue bridge. Most of the wintering ducks were added to my 2009 list: Mallard, Gadwall, Northern Pintail Duck, American Wigeon, Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Canvasback, Redhead, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, Common Goldeneye, Barrow's Goldeneye, Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser, Common Merganser, Ruddy Ducks and American Coots. Raptors included Northern Harrier and Bald Eagle. A Northern Shrike was below 88th avenue at the most eastern Dahlia Ponds. I ran into Dave King and Ray Simmons who started down to look at the 4 Barrow's Goldeneyes. Meanwhile I scoped the East Gravel Lake from the east side. A Glaucous Gull was on the ice just offshore and I managed to take about 600 photos (not taking a chance that they would not come out). One thing I noticed was that this Glaucous Gull was not the 1st year Glaucous Gull that I reported on the S. Platte River mudflats on 12/25. Its mantle and bill appeared like a 3rd year bird (most likely the one reported by Leukering on 12/25). Next I spend 15 minutes looking unsuccessfully for the American Dipper observed last week near Lowell Ponds Wildlife Area. When I drove around the Loretto Heights University, there were plenty of White-cheeked Geese, but no Greater White-fronted Goose. Noticing that Fort Logan National Cemetery was below the hill where the college sits, I drove through. A Greater White-fronted Goose stood on the ice at Veteran's Lake (western lake). A juvenile Snow Goose stood on the ice at Memorial Lake (eastern lake). Photos to be posted on the CoBus website tomorrow. Nearby Marston Reservoir had many waterfowl, but nothing uncommon. I did pick up my first 2 Double-crested Cormorants of 2009. My next stop was Platte Canyon Reservoir (actually parked at its most southeastern lot and walked to South Platte Park. The Dunlin is still just upstream of the C470 bridge. This access is a slightly shorter walk than driving into Chatfield Reservoir and its dog walking area. Besides, I had not purchased my 2009 State Park Pass yet. I ran into Steve Stackowiak who gave me directions to a Winter Wren in South Platte Park. I thought I would give the bird 2 hours to show. At 1.5 hours it popped out of the willows and grasses along the western banks of the Platte, gave me a 5 second look, and re-buried itself. It was last seen at the bottom of the willows even with the northern half of the island (described by Steve and the CoBus website directions). I waited another 30 minutes to see if it would show up again, but then had to leave to meet Bryan and Sue Ehlmann. They had "staked out" a Swamp Sparrow and female Greater Scaup at the Centennial Airport Water Treatment Pond (birds found on 12/28). While waiting for the Winter Wren to reappear, a Prairie Falcon zipped by over my head. A female Belted Kingfisher rattled at me for disturbing her hunting grounds. We all arrived at the same time and scoped the cattails for the Swamp Sparrow. It was relocated farther north than Bryan and Sue had seen it on last Sunday (about 100 yards north of the gravel road cutting across the canal). After it disappeared back into the cattails, we scoped the pond. The female Greater Scaup was on the pond, but within 3 minutes of our arrival, a loud truck (airport security) drove by and scared the 300+ ducks into the air. They probably returned, but we did not stay around for that. Continued Good Birding! From: Richard Stevens <birdertoo AT hotmail.com> Date: Thu, 1 Jan 2009 04:28:44 -0700 Hello cobirders; Bryan Ehlmann, Sue Ehlmann, Rebecca Kosten and I almost went downtown Denver to see the fireworks. The TV news talked about thousands of people expected. So we decided to go for a really good first of the year bird. A friend of mine had mentioned that his family was going back east (ouch, bad weather) for the holidays. He invited us to bird his land anytime so we headed into the foothills. We passed by Reynolds Park (Foxton Road, Jefferson County) on the trip up. A Northern Pygmy-Owl answered our recordings about 10:30 pm. It only called for about 3 minutes; we figured it might be our last bird of 2008. We arrived at my friend's ranch and listened for an hour. A Northern Pygmy-Owl called about 11:45 pm! Several times it flew through the street lights on the ranch, giving us great looks at our last bird of 2008. Around 12:15 am, it landed near the barn; shortly afterwards a second owl joined it. First bird of the year and not the same one as our last! Continued Good Birding! Winds were calm when we drove through Cherry Creek Reservoir (Arapahoe County). We had changed the direction (south to north) of our Christmas counts as several Greater Prairie-Chicken locations had been previously "staked out". We observed them at two locations in Yuma County and one in Logan County! Not many Christmas counts getting them on their lists! Gary Weston will report on the counts as he was in charge of the Wray and Tamarack Ranch Christmas counts. Two additional counts were temporarily delayed as all of us were quite tired of the high winds along the Colorado eastern border. At Cherry Creek Reservoir today, it is 99+ percent frozen and we observed less than a dozen ducks out there. Several dozen White-cheeked Geese and 5 Great Blue Herons stood on the ice. It was a little strange to see the Great Blue Herons way out on the ice. What is that, protection from predators? They can not break through the ice for fish? A Virginia Rail walked below the wooden bridge at the Cottonwood Creek loop. The usual common birds were at the wetlands pond (same as Beaver Pond). Not a single American Tree Sparrow was found? No sparrows were in the campground areas. I could not find the Great Horned Owl that was observed a few weeks ago. No response to my rather poor owl imitations. We walked down to the south end of the 12 mile Beaver Pond to enjoy the sunny and calm afternoon. However, once the sun set it got cold quite fast. We managed to find 2 Virginia Rails and a Wilson's Snipe. Green-winged Teal, American Coots, Mallards, and a couple of Northern Shovelers were just about it on the unfrozen pond. Not much on the mud flats and only a couple of Song Sparrows were in the cattails. We hung around until it was quite dark to see if the Short-eared Owl would fly around; did not see one. As a result some emails not meant for public reading were accidentally and embarrassingly sent to the whole group. The present method is best for sure. Concerning a conversation on "Affects of banding". We discuss it often at our meetings. My husband has been writing a paper on the subject for months and it will appear in "Colorado Field Notes" in the near future. If you noticed, most "cobirders" posts are currently from me as most birders are conducting Christmas counts. Eighteen people are participating in the Jumbo Reservoir count today. Back to birding, Dennis Garrison didn't relocate the Tundra Swan at Confluence Park in Delta today. He found a Ross's Goose. Happy New Year, boy did 2008 go fast! Rosy Finches Pitkin 12/28 From: "Dick Filby" <dickfilby AT hotmail.com> Date: Tue, 30 Dec 2008 17:46:19 -0000 Hi all, Al Levantin and I birded around Carbondale, Garfield Co yesterday. After a chilly start at 7F the day warmed up nicely and reached freezing by mid afternoon. Birding was generally slow but we managed eight raptor species including a magnificent juvenile Northern Goshawk, Merlin, Kestrel, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Bald Eagle, Golden Eagle, Rough-legged Hawk and Red-tailed Hawk. Waterfowl were hard to come by: we saw only a single Barrow's Goldeneye, no swans, and no Hooded Mergansers. On the passerine front there was little of note apart from huge numbers of Robins (for late December). The feeders in Redstone had no nuthatches of any species when we visited. Three Cedar Waxwings in Carbondale on 2nd street were the first either of us had seen in a while. The Northern Goshawk was up CR100, past Panorama Drive, on the descent to the three way stop where it hits CR 113 at Cattle Creek. It was perched atop a tree for several minutes allowing us excellent scope views (and rubbish photos!). The Merlin was right in town, in trees by Merril Ave and Cowen Drive. On Sunday I was at Snowmass Ski area (Pitkin Co), and several Rosy Finches (30+) were frequenting the feeder at the top of Sam's Knob, including both Brown-capped and Gray-crowned. No Black Rosy Finches were seen. There were also two male Pine Grosbeaks and several Mountain Chickadees visiting. Good birding all Dick Filby Carbondale Garfield CoSubject: Re: Affects of banding rings on nestlings From: "Beverly" <goldiloucks AT yahoo.com> Date: Tue, 30 Dec 2008 16:39:36 -0000 Doesn't that just gall ya? I don't know why the default recipient is the last posters personal address! It would be neat if we could more easily get a `conversation' going that several folks could join in on, huh? Ya gotta choose "COBirder AT yahoogroups.com" to show up here... I agree with you…and really don't like the idea of being overly concerned about such things; but birds ARE dying…I just wonder if the metal is part of the problem. Personally…I have no idea. Would plastic hold up to weather and other environmental elements? I asked about weight because while some bands may weigh less than a gram, what does that do to the movement of a bird which only weighs a few grams? You can tell I've never handled the bands nor the birds! Maybe some sort of plastic. Weight would be less than a gram and no toxicity issues. Best, Terry RSubject: Re: Affects of banding rings on nestlings From: "Beverly" <goldiloucks AT yahoo.com> Date: Tue, 30 Dec 2008 16:25:59 -0000 Wow, that's really interesting. I've wondered for some time about the weight of the aluminum bands, as well as the contamination from the metal. Aren't there studies that show we `might' suffer from cooking meals in aluminum pots & pans? What might a wide aluminum bracelet to do our health…or that of small birds? As far as the weight goes, I'm quite sure the bands used for birding weight practically nothing, but what about a small bird that eventually wears three or four such bands? Does the weight of multiple bands (or even one on a small bird) cause any problems with balance or flight? I'm neither a scientist nor an expert birder (as you might assume), but I am curious about such things. Perhaps the solution to banding nestlings is to band them a bit later, I understand just before fledging, some birds stop being so fussy about cleanliness.
