Droppings:
06/26/09 Bird Photos Richard Crossley
Among the millions of bird photos on the Net only a few stand out. Among these are Richard Crossley's. From the forthcoming "The I.D. Guide", enjoy this selection .
06/12/09 Hispeed Hummer
The National Geographic website has high speed video footage of an Anna's Hummingbird in flight. Judging "speed" by body-lengths traveled/second, hummers are the fastest flyers flying. The NG piece also points to a very fine (2007) gallery of hummingbird photos. More videos featuring hummers can be found by searching the Internet Bird Collection site.
06/04/09 Inside Birding New from Cornell Labs
Videos at the "Inside Birding" page to improve your identification skills as well as to entertain. So far there are episodes (hosted by Chris Wood and Jessie Barry) on "Size and Shape", "Color Pattern", "Behavior", and "Habitat". For more on birding check the home page - All About Birds
05/22/09 Wild in the City TV Birding
Richard Crossley (you know him from his very fine shorebird book) is pitching a TV series on birding to Animal Planet. To determine potential viewership there's a 5 minute demo and very short survey.
Try the video (I'll bet you love it; it was a big hit in this household) and fill out the survey.

03/31/09 Back From Colombia BOOK NOW
Colombia is both beautiful and birdy and now, after a long absence, back in the catalogs of US bird tour companies: VENT is running several tours this year and next (with Steve Hilty), Wings (with Barry Walker) has a tour in August, and it's reliably reported that Field Guides will have a tour announcement soon.
We're just back from the Birdquest tour which I can very highly recommend. Among the many notable species seen were Santa Marta and Chestnut-naped Antpittas, Bearded Helmetcrest, White-tailed Starfrontlet and Blossomcrown, Beautiful Woodpecker, Apical Flycatcher, Yellow-eared Parrot, and Northern Screamer.
The infrastructure and main roads are good but be prepared for some long days, long hikes and rough mountain roads.
