Welcome to the City of Calgary and Nature Calgary Bird Alert. This Bird Ale=
rt was recorded on Friday, January 20......................An odd-looking O=
wl that is being called a LONG-EARED OWL is being seen by many observers at=
 Elliston Park in southeast Calgary. The bird was originally found there on=
 Monday, January  16 by Joseph Dylke. The bird seems larger than an ordinar=
y Long-eared Owl and has a white body with black markings. It has larger ea=
r tufts than a Great Horned Owl, but, the tufts are not centrally placed li=
ke they should be on a Long-eared Owl. The face of the bird, however, is li=
ke a Long-eared Owl's. The bird is being seen almost daily in trees around =
the Parking Lot on the east side of the park. Martha Wilson also saw a LONG=
-EARED OWL, but, near High River on Thursday, January 6. PHil Quinn found a=
 Barred Owl in the southeast part of the Weaselhead in southwest Calgary on=
 Tuesday, September 17, while several observers recently have reported Nort=
hern Saw Whet Owls somewhere on their respective properties................=
.Jackie Sill found an AMERICAN KESTREL east of Turner Valley on Tuesday, Ja=
nuary 17; there have been few reports of that species in southern Alberta t=
his Winter..................Shelley Koch photographed an ALBINO Pileated Wo=
odpecker east of Sherwood Park at Edmonton on Thursday, January 12; that is=
 the 4th. ALBINO of that species found in Alberta in the past 2-3 years....=
............A wide variety of uncommon Winter waterfowl have been reported =
in the Calgary area within recent weeks; Ducks being seen almost daily now =
at Carburn Park in Calgary include 2 female CANVASBACKS; a male and a femal=
e RING-NECKED DUCK; 2 Lesser Scaup, and, up to as many as 7 Redheads. A PIE=
D-BILLED GREBE is also successfully overwintering there as is a male Americ=
an Wigeon that is being seen at Bowmont Park in northwest Calgary. Blake We=
is found a 1st. year male LONG-TAILED DUCK on the Bow River in Burnsmead in=
 east Fish Creek PP on Tuesday, January 17, and, the bird was seen slightly=
 further downriver in Hull's Wood in the Park on Thursday, January 19. Elli=
ston Park was a first location for a male Wood Duck on Tuesday, January 17,=
 when it was seen by Lorrie Anderson. Evan Walters found a GADWALL at Carbu=
rn Park in Calgary on Sunday, January 15.........................Trevor Chu=
rchill found a WESTERN MEADOWLARK just north of Calgary on Friday, January =
13, and, a WESTERN MEADOWLARK found by Terry Korolyk and Nature Calgary on =
Saturday, January 14  on Range Road 265 south of Twp. Rd. 262 east of Keoma=
 was about the 6th. one found this winter in our area.............Andrew Ha=
rt found a single LAPLAND LONGSPUR on Sunday, January 8 at the Range Road 2=
64-Hwy. 560 junction east of Calgary.............Chris Fisher reported a Wh=
ite-throated Sparrow in Calgary Midnapore on Friday, January 6, then, on Su=
nday, January 8, David Scott and Ken Orich saw both White-throated Sparrow =
and Harris's Sparrow in Fairfield Gardens in Lethbridge.................Sha=
un Herrington Kenworthy had an American Goldfinch at her home in Strathmore=
 on Thursday, January 12......................Terry Korolyk watched a flock=
 of 3000 Snow Buntings on Sunday, January 15, on 320 Street 2.1 Kilometres =
south of Highway 549 west of Millarville........................A pair of C=
OMMON GRACKLES are still overwintering in High River as of January 20; for =
